SUMMER

In Chinese medicine the summer season represents the FIRE PHASE and corresponds with the heart organ, the emotion of joy, the color red, inspiration, desire, full-bodied expression and extroversion. Poetry that nourishes the spirit of our Fire Elements is filled with the correspondences of summer and the Fire Phase.

CATCH FIRE
(G,A)

Walking out to sea
The body alive in purple waters
Reflecting red and orange sunrise.

What you do and live must catch
Fire to the waking depths inside you.
Do not settle for the concept of experience,
Writing what you will not lead
Or the burden of reading
What you will not be.

Following the birds to the horizon,
I lost this song
To fly.

CATCH FIRE:

I wrote Catch Fire during a particularly fiery period when poetry was erupting from me uncontrollably night and day. I remember during this time how I could not even take a walk without being driven to song. It was actually very frustrating time because I was always on the job, being constantly harassed and dictated to by the poem faeries.
Catch Fire came through me one morning as I walked out to the ocean for a walk. This day I was determined to take a walk without having to write, but Catch Fire came through anyway, true to the fire of inspiration. The last stanza tells of my last desperate effort to escape the poem by joining the birds. It didn’t work. So, I wrote Catch Fire down when I got back to my car.
Catch Fire exemplifies the Fire Phase for me because it speaks to the inspiration, exuberance and courage (derived form the French word cour, meaning heart) necessary to listen to and follow our hearts and truest desires. Catch Fire is part of the “Healing Poem Cards” series and is also available in calligraphy as Poetry-Art.
